To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee :: To Kill a Mockingbird Essays

The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee contain a connecting family who are the Cunninghams. The Cunninghams are exceptionally poor; they are individuals who live in the forested areas. They are a family who rely exceptionally upon crops. Walter Cunningham, the 'father' of the family needs to buckle down on the development of yields since crops is the main type of wages for them. The Cunninghams have no cash. Their best way to endure is through paying others with their harvests. The Cunninghams are not primary characters in the book, yet they are characters who 'brought out' other characters' character. Harper Lee shows that there is a great deal of bias going on in Maycomb by placing the Cunninghams in the book. "The Cunninghams [were] nation people, farmers"(21) who are straightforward individuals in Maycomb, they "never took anything they [could not] pay back"(23), yet they are unreasonably abused by part of the general public in Maycomb. The Cunninghams are destitute individuals, yet fair also. The Cunninghams have no cash by any stretch of the imagination, as Scout was portraying them, "[they] have most likely never observed seventy five percent together simultaneously in [their] life"(23). It is sure that the Cunninghams carry on with a poor life, yet that doesn't prevent them from being straightforward. The Cunninghams don't take anything from anybody on the off chance that they don't have an approach to reimburse them. In the class when Ms.Caroline was giving Walter a coin, Walter didn't take it since he realized that it was difficult to repay her. I decided that it is truly developed for a youngster to act that way. I additionally appreciated how the Cunninghams had the option to suffer by offering harvests to individuals as a type of installment. At the point when Atticus helps Sr.Walter with his entailment, Walter doesn't take care of him with cash, yet with crops. The Cunninghams are abused by part of the general public in Maycomb. Auntie Alexandra, who abuses them the most, is partial toward the Cunninghams, she doesn't care for them. She believes that her notoriety, and economic wellbeing will be recolored if Scout plays with Walter Jr.. Scout needs to welcome Walter over, however Aunt Alexandra doesn't care for Walter, she says that they are people from various class. She thinks it is ideal in the event that they don't see one another. She once converses with Scout about how unique they are, "Because - he - will be - refuse, that is the reason you can't play with him.

Comparative Study on the Origin of Religion free essay sample

Since the mid 1800s, there had been an adequate measure of cynics attempting to represent the starting point of religion. The fundamental inquiry on everybody’s mind was the place does religion originated from? Some accepted that individuals created religion since they didn’t comprehend the powers of nature around them. Others accept that religion was made as a method of control individuals. In the nineteenth century, individuals were acquainted with sociology and anthropologists who once examined crude culture were presented to a few hypotheses on the birthplace of religion. Edward B Tylor was one of the main who built up a hypothesis on religion. Max Muller was a German teacher at Oxford University whose intrigue included Indian folklore and the investigation of religion. Another anthropologist was George Frazer who key commitments to strict humanities was a strict reference book. There are numerous clarifications to the birthplace of religion, one of the most conspicuous being Edward B. Tylor’s hypothesis of animism. This hypothesis is viewed as the establishment of the physical development of religion; two other persuasive strict anthropologists, Max Muller and James Frazer, additionally based their clarifications of the cause of religion on nature. Every one of the three strict anthropologists are comparative as in they followed the advancement of religion trying to make sense of its starting point however contrast in the manner they approach the idea of religion. Edward B. Tylor built up the hypothesis of animism to help clarify the most simple type of religion. Animism is characterized as the conviction that ascribes spirits and spirits to people, plants, creatures and different elements. Animistic strict convictions are notable among crude social orders who were â€Å"so low in culture as to have no strict originations what so ever† (Tylor). Tylor thought about animism as the most crude stage in the improvement of religion. He accepted that the impression of dreams and the perception of death made crude individuals build up the possibility of spirits and spirits. Tylor felt that crude individuals accepted that everything in nature encapsulated a spirit. He speculated that a faith in animism prompted the arrangement of an increasingly summed up god and, in the long run, the making of monotheism. Animism at last prompted the advancement of religion in the brains of the individuals. It drove them to accept something so straightforward as nature and use it to clarify the regular wonder in their condition. A clashing hypothesis that utilizes the idea of development is that of Max Muller. Another hypothesis of the beginning of religion was created by Max Muller. He accepted that individuals originally created religion from the perception of nature. As per his hypothesis, crude individuals got mindful of normality of the seasons, the tides and the periods of the moon. Their reaction to these powers in nature was to customize them†(Hopfe and Woodward). They customized them through semantics. Muller accepted that improvement of religion was a reason for disarray in language (Goldsmith). There is by all accounts a gap among Muller and T ylor over the idea of the source of religion. Max Muller accepted that the response to the sole cause of religion could be found before and an individual can follow its starting point in the semantic remainders in the Indo-European dialects. Tylor felt that executing an ethnological methodology would be more effective than reading dialects for answers of the cause of religion. Advancement of religion is obvious in Muller’s hypothesis on the grounds that â€Å"they embodied the powers of nature, made legends to portray their exercises, and in the end created pantheons and religions around them† (Hopfe and Woodward). By creating religions and pantheons from recognizing the powers in nature is an away from of the development of religion in the human attitude. Despite the fact that their speculations are unique, the possibility of development of religion in the human brain is clear in both Muller and Tylor’s hypothesis. Sir James George Frazer, a kindred strict anthropologist, started building up his own speculations on religion. Frazer accepted that people utilized enchantment as an approach to control nature and the occasions around them and when that fizzled, they went to religion. They utilized religion to control the occasions for some time and when religion bombed they went to science. Frazer’s speculations were like those of Tylor. The two of them accepted that the human brain created similarly as that of physical development.. Despite the fact that Frazer adopted a comparable strategy to Tylor in following the birthplace of religion, he adjusted Tylor’s hypothesis and supplanted Tylor’s hypothesis of animism with his concept of enchantment. A closeness among Frazer and Tylor is that the two of them accepted that religion started from a deliberate strategy for portraying and comprehending a peculiar world. Frazer replaces the possibility that religion clarifies nature by presenting science as a substitute. Frazer’s way to deal with following the root of religion is like that of Tylor and Muller since every one of the three followed the development of religion trying to make sense of its inception. Both Muller and Frazer’s hypothesis are like Tylor’s hypothesis since both follow the starting point of religion through its development yet vary in the manner they decipher religion. Every one of them three appeared to miss an essential component of religion which is that nobody who rehearses religion is doing as such to clarify how the world functions. Individuals use religion for a few reasons. Some utilization it to offer significance to their lives while others use it to implement social request. Perhaps every one of the three anthropologists didn’t miss this key part yet rather didn’t think about it because of the quick development of religion.

The Separation Of Corporate Ownership Finance Essay - Free Essay Example

Agency theory suggests that the separation of corporate ownership and control potentially leads to self-interested actions by managers (Jensen and Meckling, 1976). To combat agency problems, outside directors, due to their presumed independence relative to insiders, may be able to do a better job in monitoring and controlling management, thus helping improve firm performance (Walsh and Seward, 1990). In the conceptual, practitioner, and policy literature, there is a near consensus in favor of a higher proportion of outside directors. Still dwelling on whether independent directors produce superior performance for firms, and value for shareholders, Choi et al. (2007) report that the effects of independent outside directors on firm performance are strongly positive. Reporting under a study titled Do outside Directors Enhance Firm Performance: Evidence from an Emerging Market, the authors comment that the results of their study support a notion that board independence is critical in post-crisis emerging market environments that lack sufficient liquidity and infrastructure, and which are subject to economic instability and external shocks. So, for South Korea, an emerging market country, this study provides evidence that there is a positive relationship between board independence and higher firm performance, especially in the aftermath of the Asian crisis of 1997 which was seen to have occurred as a result of the poor governance system of that region. The authors thus report that the basic empirical result of their study is that board independence, measured by the proportion of outside directors on the board, has significant and positive effects on firm performance in the post economic- crisis Korea. They note that this positive relationship with firm performance is stronger in firms with true independent directors than with those whose non-executive directors have professional ties with their firm (grey directors). Comparing their findings with earl ier findings in the US, the authors contrast their results from those obtained in the US that affirm no positive relationship between board composition and firm performance. An Analysis of the association between firms investment opportunities, board composition and firm performance is the subject of a study by Hutchinson (2002) in which 229 Australian firms were surveyed. Results of the study showed that the investment opportunities of the firms surveyed are strongly associated with a higher proportion of executive directors on the board. That is to say that firms that have a higher proportion of executive directors on their board tend to have more investment opportunities than firms with a greater proportion of non-executive directors. The result of the study also suggests that a higher proportion of non-executive directors on the board of growth firms monitor managers actions to ensure that such actions are value adding. Again, the author reports that the interaction of invest ment opportunities and the proportion of non-executive directors on the board shows that firms perform better with increased number of non-executive directors on the board. This suggests that the negative relationship between firm performance and investment opportunities is weakened when the proportion of non-executive directors on the board is higher. Thus, it does appear that the monitoring role of non-executive directors overcomes the agency problem of high investment opportunities such that these firms become more profitable. Kumar and Sivaramakrishnan (2007) used an agency model of the firm to analyze how the board-CEO relationship affects shareholder value. They measured board dependence on the CEO by the extent to which the boards interests are intrinsically aligned with the CEOs interests, and came to the finding that, other things held constant, a more dependent board exhibits a greater alignment with the CEO. They were thus able to examine the effects of bringing to the board more independent directors or less of them on the firms investment, managerial compensation, board equity compensation and shareholder value. The main finding in this study is that shareholder value can increase as board dependence (not independence) increases. Indian Evidence: In developed economies corporate governance issues mostly focus on disciplining the management, whereas in case of emerging economies such as India, the problem lies in limiting expropriation of minority shareholders. Indian corporate sector is characterized by the presence of largely three types of companies: a) public sector units, where government is the major shareholder, b) multi-national companies, where the foreign parent is the major shareholder, and c) the Indian business groups where either the promoters are major shareholders or they have a minority stake with government owned financial institutions owning a sizeable stake and rest owned by the general public. The problem of dominant s hareholders, with or without a higher stake, gives rise to serious corporate governance issues (Varma, 1997) in case of India such dominate shareholders are a particular group or family. The quality of corporate governance in such a family based organization is always been an issue. India presents a unique scenario for corporate governance research because of the important role played by the promoters of Indian companies. The promoters maintain control over the group companies by virtue of a pyramid ownership structure. Unlike in the Western countries, the major corporate governance problem in India is one of exploitation of the minority shareholders by the promoters who are often the majority shareholders. ( Mishra, Mohanty 2006). Corporate governance in emerging economies such as India poses a challenge due to the typical characteristics associated with such economies such as imperfect product market, illiquid capital market, rigid labor market and regulatory environment, and l ack of adequate contract enforcing mechanisms (Khanna and Palepu, 1997). Companies with good governance practices raise money at a lower cost of debt (Agarwal et al., 1996). The linkage between corporate governance and firm performance in the presence of information asymmetry and institutional void makes an interesting area of research, particularly in countries such as India. Independent directors on the board have significant impact on the performance of the firm. The efficacy of outside directors on the corporate boards of non-financial Indian companies for influences firm performance. Research finding reveals that while the proportion of grey directors on board has marginally deteriorated effect, the independent directors proportion has an insignificant positive effect on firm value. (Kumar and Singh 2008) Several other empirical studies, however find either no significant effect or negative effect of outside directors on firm performance. Many researchers (Baysinger an d Butler, 1985; Dalton et al., 1998; Dalton and Daily, 1999; Fernandes, 2005) do not find any relationship between board composition with representation of outside independent directors and firm performance. Hermalin and Weishbach (1991), Meharan (1995), report an insignificant relation between corporate board independence and various measures of firm performance. Many researchers also have reported a negative relationship between the proportion of outside directors and firm value. Bhagat and Black (2002), finds a negative relationship between the proportion of outside directors on board and firm performance. Efficacy of outside directors as governance mechanism is therefore questionable in the developed counties because of presence external governance mechanism like mergers and acquisition, market for corporate control and product market competition.

Analysis Of The Poem Caucasia By Danzy Senna Essay

Caucasia written by Danzy Senna, is similar and yet different compared to Song of Solomon. In Caucasia, Birdie is a young bi-racial girl, in which she is the daughter of a black man and white woman. While Birdie appears and passes for white, she embraces her black identity even more so. Birdie is torn apart from those she loves, yet she undergoes a journey to find them. In Song of Solomon, there is an all black family- the Dead family, that struggles within itself and within an all black community. Milkman is born into a world that is divided between black and white. Throughout the novel he develops as a person with the help of a wise family member and his own experience. According to June Jordan, â€Å"Affirmation of Black values and lifestyle within the American context is, indeed, an act of protest.† (Notes Toward a Black Balancing of Love and Hatred, 47) Through affirmation of Black values and lifestyle, Caucasia and Song of Solomon show instances of Black protest in the f orm of Birdie’s and Milkman’s characters, their relationship to their black communities and family, and the adventures that they undergo to find answers. When Cole and her father leave Birdie, they leave her a box that her father had written â€Å"Negrobilia† on the side. Birdie holds this box very dear to her heart, adding to it as the novel progresses. This Negrobilia box represents and symbolizes Black values and lifestyle consisting of items that Birdie, her father and sister owned, and had used. The items in

Swot Analysis for Sony Ericsson Essay Example For Students

Swot Analysis for Sony Ericsson Essay SWOT Analysis for Sony Ericsson Strengths: Increased market shares Reduced losses: Sony Ericsson has been successful in reducing its company losses in the past year. The company cut its total losses by more than half in the second half of 2002. Sony Ericsson should look to continue to cut costs in order to narrow company losses even further. The success of the joint venture will be viewed by its ability to break even and generate profits. Brand name: Having a strong brand name means that it will be more likely that Sony Ericsson will sell more handsets, as consumers normally choose to buy branded products with which they are familiar rather than those that are unfamiliar. Sony Ericsson should look to leverage both the Sony and Ericsson brand names, as they are both respected brand names in the fields of electronics and telecommunications. The joining of these two brand names will again help the company to increase awareness of its products resulting in increased sales of handsets. New products: Sony Ericsson has released a line of new products that it is forecasted will help the company to increase its share of the market, as well as generate extra sales and profits. Weaknesses: Loss making: The Sony Ericsson joint venture is currently loss making. Sony Ericsson must try to generate profits as soon as possible or the venture may be deemed unsuccessful. Company losses may still be tolerated over the next couple of years, as the Sony Ericsson venture has only been trading for a relatively short period of time. However, sustained losses over a period of time may lead to either Sony or Ericsson deciding to cease their funding of the joint venture. Marketing Costs: The launch of the company’s line of new cellular handsets will mean that marketing costs will increase for the months when the products are launched and for the initial period of the products’ life cycle. High marketing costs are a necessity in this situation in order to create awareness and stimulate demand for Sony Ericsson’s handsets in a marketplace that is saturated with competitive offerings. High marketing costs will make it more difficult for Sony Ericsson to narrow losses, breakeven and generate profits. Opportunities: Social Media: Sony Ericsson is boosting its social media activity in a bid to increase its share of the smart phone market, which is under pressure from brands like Apple and Google. Upgrade Segment Expanding Market G: The predicted transition to 3G wireless communication services provides Sony Ericsson with an opportunity to capture market share and generate revenues and profits. Sony Ericsson must cater for the increase in demand in this area by producing a number of handsets that will utilize this 3G technology. The company is making an effort to penetrate this sector of the market and has had some success in doing so. However, Sony Ericsson still tra ils industry rivals such as Motorola, NEC and Panasonic within the 3G sector of the market. Phone Design and Accessories: Sony Ericsson must monitor the latest trends in customer preferences for the design of handsets and the accessories provided for use in conjunction with handsets. For example, camera phones are expected to increase in popularity over the coming years. The increase in popularity of camera phones presents Sony Ericsson with an opportunity to increase its revenues and generate profits, as camera phones have a much higher average selling price than normal voice phones. Popular Handset Technology Threats: Strong Competition: Sony Ericsson faces strong competition in the marketplace from a number of industry rivals. The company’s competitors include Nokia, Samsung, Panasonic, LG Electronics, Motorola, Siemens and NEC. Sony Ericsson will also encounter increasing competition from up and coming Chinese cellular handset manufacturers such as TCL, Bird, Eastcomm and Legend. All of these companies will combine to take away sales and market share from Sony Ericsson. .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b , .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .postImageUrl , .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b , .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:hover , .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:visited , .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:active { border:0!important; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:active , .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub9211d8100f3f4594ae8ed4b2bd8e99b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Detection Of Biological Molecules EssayPricing Pressure: The increasing competition in the cellular handset market will inevitably lead to pricing pressure. Failure to do so could mean that the company will continue to make losses or only generate modest profits, when the potential is there for the company to achieve much more.
